    ‘BIG RED Grocery Giveaway’ Marks 150 Years of A&P

    In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. has rolled out the ‘BIG RED Grocery Giveaway,’ an eight-week customer promotion running from May 15 until July 11 at 241 participating A&P, SuperFresh, Waldbaum’s and The Food Emporium stores.

    In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. has rolled out the ‘BIG RED Grocery Giveaway,’ an eight-week customer promotion running from May 15 until July 11 at 241 participating A&P, SuperFresh, Waldbaum’s and The Food Emporium stores.

    The grocer’s over 3.6 million Club Card customers now have the opportunity to win $1.8 million in available prizes and discounts, including grocery gift cards, $300 shopping sprees and free groceries for a year. Three shoppers will even win a 2010 Ford Mustang Convertible. Anyone can become a Club Card member at no charge by filling out an application at any participating A&P banner store.

    The promotion offers shoppers four ways to play and win: Instant Win, Collect to Win, Enter-to-Win and Online Win. Customers get a game ticket every time they shop with their Club Card, in addition to qualified Bonus Tickets.

    Each ticket contains two “collect” stickers, which can be matched to the Collector Card to win prizes. Tickets also include an Instant Prize or Discount, an Enter-to-Win ballot or an Online PIN.

    Montvale, N.J.-based A&P operates 436 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.

    In other marketing news, Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter, which operates 181 stores in eight Southern states, last week introduced “The Great Grocery Giveaway” promotion, in which every 400th shopper receives a coupon for free groceries, applicable to that purpose. There’s no limit to the number of times a customer can win. To participate, shoppers must have Harris Teeter’s savings card, known as a VIC card, which they can sign up for at no charge. As an added bonus, if the Instant Winner coupon goes to a current member of e-VIC, which provides weekly e-mails with personalized weekly specials and member-only discounts, the customer will also receive a second coupon good for $10 off his or her next Harris Teeter purchase of $10 or more. The promotion runs through June 2.
