Albertson's Mandates Temp Monitoring Labels for Fresh Foods

BOISE, Idaho - Albertson's LLC here said it will require new temperature-monitoring devices on all inbound fresh meat, seafood, and produce shipments to its distribution centers.

The chain said its preferred device is the PakSense Smart Label by PakSense Inc., a flat, 2"-by-2" disk sealed in food-grade packaging. Lights on the sensor alert quality-assurance personnel if temperature specifications have been breached, and all data collected by the label can be downloaded and graphed.

"We have always monitored the temperatures of our perishable products during shipping," said Dave Dean, Albertson's group v.p./procurement. "But we found that traditional temperature monitoring devices were bulky and expensive. A quick return-on-investment analysis on the PakSense Label convinced me that making the switch would save us a substantial amount of money -- and provide better quality assurance for our customers."

Dean added that using PakSense Labels enables the grocer to sample temperatures throughout a trailer, not just on the top.

PakSense said its labels track the temperature of a perishable product's environment during distribution and enable quality assurance personnel to make better quality and safety decisions. The device is intended for one-time use, and priced accordingly.

Albertson's LLC operates supermarkets in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, and Utah. The company has warehouses handling fresh product in Denver, Colorado, Fort Worth, Texas, Phoenix, Arizona, and Plant City, Florida.
