    Alfalfa’s Kicks Off 2nd ‘B’Earthday’ Celebration

    Retailer launches up-cycling program, weekend Earth Day event

    Natural and organic foods retailer Alfalfa’s Market will kick off its second B’Earthday celebration with an enhanced  recycling program.

    Beginning April 17, Alfalfa’s will allow customers to deposit used baby food pouches, Tom’s of Maine personal care items, and No. 4 plastic bags at the store. The grocer will send these items to Terracycle where they will be recycled and made into new plastic items, such as park benches, backpacks and tote bags.

    “Alfalfa’s re-opened its doors at its original location two years ago, on Earth Day,” said Mark Retzloff, CEO and chairman of Alfalfa’s. “We are constantly striving to tread more lightly on the planet, and our work towards being a zero waste store and new up-cycling program, truly make us an innovator in the food retail industry landscape."

    To celebrate its commitment to environmental stewardship, Alfalfa’s is hosting a three-day B’Earthday celebration April 20-22. The event will kick off with a tasting fair featuring more than 25 local natural and organic food and product companies, and customers will have the opportunity to test drive electric bicycles from Pete’s Electric Bikes.

    Alfalfa’s B’Earthday celebration will also offer free electric vehicle test drives from the Drive Sunshine Institute, and employees will participate in a neighborhood clean-up of the University Hill area around the store. The Urban Farm Company of Colorado will also be on hand to provide planting and gardening demonstrations.

    Boulder, Colo.-based Alfalfa’s Market operates 11 stores acquired by Wild Oats Markets in 1996. In 2011, Mark Retzloff, an original Alfalfa’s founder, Barney Feinblum, Hugo van Seenus and Jimmy Searcy resurrected the Alfalfa’s name with the reopening of the original Alfalfa’s at Broadway and Arapahoe in Boulder.
