A&P Aids Food-rescue Program During Holidays

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. (A&P) has made a $20,000 donation to the “Table to Table” community-based food-rescue program to help feed the hungry during the holiday season.

Table to Table collects prepared and perishable food and delivers it to organizations that serve the needy in Bergen, Hudson, Essex and Passaic counties throughout New Jersey. The program is the first and only food rescue program in northeast part of the state solely dedicated to redistributing prepared and perishable foods.

A&P provided nearly 5,000 pounds of its private label Smart Price pasta “Smart Price” to the cause, and arrange for vendor partners such as Shady Brook Farms and Allen Foods to contribute over 15,000 pounds of poultry.

“This donation will enable us to meet our 2009 goal of delivering enough food to serve over 6 million meals,” noted Ilene Isaacs, executive director of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based Table to Table. “Without the dedicated and generous support of partners like A&P, reaching that goal would never have been possible.”

Montvale, N.J.-based A&P operates 435 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum’s, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
