A&P Opens Latest Version of Fresh Format Today

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. today is opening a remodeled Fresh store that takes the format a step further with "more of a European fresh market feel," a chain spokeswoman told Progressive Grocer yesterday.

The Holmdel, N.J. store, is like the recent Park Ridge, N.J. renovation, but on a much grander scale, according to A&P spokeswoman Patti Councill. The new store measures 55,000 square feet, compared to the Park Ridge store's modest 24,000 square feet. It boasts such new features as a Starbucks cafE; a 32-foot pasta wall offering domestic and imported pasta, sauces, and olive oils; and a pharmacy offering organic and natural products, Councill said.

A three-day opening event will include samples, a carnival wheel with A&P Fresh brand giveaways, a roaming magician, special sales, and Brazilian guitarists.
