A&P Raises Money for Troops

New Jersey supermarkets owned by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), as well as the company’s banners in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and Maryland, are sponsoring a fundraising campaign in all 436 of the grocer’s stores over the Memorial Day weekend in support of Operation Shoebox New Jersey.

The “Help Us Help Them” in-store campaign kicks off Sunday, May 24 and will run through Saturday, May 30. Shoppers who donate $1 at checkout will receive a “Support Our Troops” postcard to sign. At the end of the campaign, after being displayed in each store, the cards will be collected by Operation Shoebox New Jersey volunteers at the end of the camaign and sent in personal care packages to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The money donated by shoppers at the stores will help ensure the uninterrupted flow of care packages overseas troops. “Help Us Help Them” has been spotlighted in A&P supermarket circulars in the weeks before the campaign.

Montavale, N.J.-based A&P operates stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum’s, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
