A&P Rolls Out Consistent ID Policy for Alcohol, Tobacco Sales

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. (A&P) yesterday instituted a consistent corporate policy for verifying identification for customers purchasing alcohol and tobacco sales at all of its banner stores.

The grocer’s new policy requires a mandatory identification check for all customers buying alcohol or tobacco in its grocery stores. The consistent application of verification eliminates the need for associates to make age estimates based on visual assessments, thereby ending the potential for minors to buy either item.

According to A&P, “[T]his new policy makes the sale of these products seamless and protects our community children.”

Montvale, N.J.-based A&P operates 445 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
