Bi-Lo Holdings Readies to Convert 22 Piggly Wiggly Stores

Bi-Lo Holdings LLC, the parent company of Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, said its acquisition of 22 South Carolina and coastal Georgia stores from Charleston, S.C.-based Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. Inc. was slated to close on Nov. 2, following which Bi-Lo Holdings would begin rebranding the stores under the Bi-Lo banner.

Twelve locations, in Charleston, Ladson, Edisto Beach, Johns Island and Bluffton, S.C., and Savannah, Garden City, Darien, Pooler and Glennville, Ga., will close on Nov. 2 and reopen on Nov. 8 as Bi-Lo stores. Another eight stores, in Bamberg, Clover, Prosperity, St Matthews, Lexington, Columbia, Mullins and East Greenwood, S.C., will close on Nov. 9 and reopen under their new banner on Nov. 15.

Bi-Lo Holdings will also purchase a Piggly Wiggly store in Murrells Inlet, S.C., which will close on Nov. 9 and reopen as a Bi-Lo supermarket on Nov. 15. This store is in addition to the Piggly Wiggly stores Bi-Lo said in September that it would acquire.

Finally, a Piggly Wiggly on Willowbrook Boulevard in Pawleys Island, S.C., will close temporarily on or before Nov. 9 to undergo a Bi-Lo renovation that the company expects to last about three to four months, advising customers in the meantime to shop at a Bi-Lo store on Ocean Highway. The Ocean Highway store will close permanently when the renovation of the former Piggly Wiggly is complete. According to Bi-Lo Holdings, associates at both locations can apply for other open positions at nearby stores and will receive help throughout the transition process.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Bi-Lo Holdings employs nearly 60,000 associates at 686 Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores and 482 in-store pharmacies in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
