Big Y Aiding Okla. Hurricane Survivors

Through Saturday, June 8, Big Y customers and employees can donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief at all Big Y locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut to help communities affected by the recent tornado in Oklahoma.

“The Red Cross continues to expand our relief efforts across Oklahoma, with additional kitchens opening today and more trucks and volunteers flowing into the state," noted Lisa Piehler, CEO of Red Cross of Central and Western Massachusetts. “Thanks to Big Y, their customers and employees, the Red Cross can continue to provide safe refuge, food and snacks, emotional support and health care services to people in need.”

Among Big Y’s past initiatives are campaigns to alleviate both international and domestic disasters, including the 2004 tsunami, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, and, most recently, Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, for which the Springfield, Mass.-based grocer presented donations to the American Red Cross of $75,000.
