Big Y Opens Two Conn. Stores Today

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y here is debuting two World Class Markets in the state of Connecticut, at 355 Hawley Lane in Stratford and 1289 Foxon Road Rt. 80 in North Branford. Both stores started construction in May 2007, represent an investment of over $11 million to complete; and each hired almost 200 new employees.

The openings bring the retailer's total store count to 57.

The 16 extra-wide grocery aisles in both stores not only carry items found in a typical supermarket, but also specialty foods from such areas of the world as Asia, Central and South America, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, and Australia, said the company.

Additionally, both new Big Y World Class Markets will share such features as an exclusively full-service fresh meat department offering featuring USDA Choice Big Y All Natural Angus Beef, among other high-quality items; an International Food Court with restaurant-style seating; a full array of top-quality, often native-grown produce; a full-service floral department; a huge variety of organic foods; and a Big Y Pharmacy.

Family-owned and -operated Big Y operates 57 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,800 employees.
