BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. plans to open smaller-sized stores measuring around 85,000 square feet, according to published reports. Laura Sen, president and COO of the Natick, Mass.-based warehouse club chain, revealed the strategy during a second-quarter earnings call.

BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. plans to open smaller-sized stores measuring around 85,000 square feet, according to published reports. Laura Sen, president and COO of the Natick, Mass.-based warehouse club chain, revealed the strategy during a second-quarter earnings call.

The smaller stores are expected to work for a middle-sized market more efficiently than a larger club, noted Sen. “Certainly, we have the flexibility to run clubs like this, and we know that they can produce some very attractive ROIs, so we are going to be able to slip into some marketplaces that we know competition could not go and within our current geography,” she said.
