BJ's Wholesale Club Teams with EggFusion on Food Safety

NATICK, Mass. -- BJ's Wholesale Club and Boulder, Colo.-based EggFusion have teamed up for a food safety initiative consisting of a freshness date etched on each individual egg to show the date by which they should be eaten, along with a traceability code that provides information on where and when each egg was packed. BJ's is the first wholesale club to offer a tamper-proof food safety feature on eggs sold to its members.

The retailer said its aim is eventually to have all eggs at its clubs feature the tamper-proof
coding laser-etched on the shell. The eggs are now available at all BJ's locations in Massachusetts.

"This is a great way to help our members understand that what they are buying is fresh and has an expiration date," said BJ's e.v.p. of merchandising and logistics Laura Sen in a statement. "We are making food safety more transparent and convenient so that members no longer have to rely on the expiration date marked on the carton."

Since BJ's rolled out the coded eggs in March, it has already marked over 12 million eggs with the freshness and traceability codes. The retailer has also used the On-egg Messaging Service to etch eggs with the company logo and messages from charitable partners Dana Farber and Second Harvest.

Members can get egg-specific production information such as where and when the eggs were packed on www.MyFreshEgg.com, using the alphanumeric traceability code. The etching process has been accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has no negative impact on the shell quality or its contents, according to EggFusion.

BJ's operates 175 Clubs and 99 gas stations in 16 states.
