Bloom Crowns First 'Whack-A-Mole' Champ

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Bloom, the innovative supermarket concept operated by Food Lion here, recently crowned the winner of its first ever chain-wide "Bloom Whack-a-Mole contest."

Jenna Odeh of Leesburg, Va. was named overall champion for participating Bloom supermarkets. Achieving 100 percent accuracy on the zany, tech-focused game in last month's competition, Odeh received a $100 Bloom gift card and the title of 2007 Whack-a-Mole champion.

Parents and children alike were enthusiastic about the wacky challenge, the retailer reported.

"All the participants had a great time and a unique shopping experience at Bloom," said Kathryn Sowers, manager of front end services/technology for Bloom, who organized the contest. "Bloom tries to create the best grocery store environment for our guests, and this contest showcases the technology we have available for parents, as well as for children's enjoyment while in our stores."

Bloom said it decided to create the contest as a way to familiarize shoppers with the innovative shopping tools the grocery chain has developed. It offers handheld personal scanners for shopping efficiency, digital produce scales, and free-standing and wall-mounted Breeze kiosks located throughout the store that can help customers check a price, locate an item, retrieve a shopping list, print a recipe, and even play games.

Whack-a-Mole is one of the games on the Breeze kiosks that provides a way for children to be a part of the shopping experience with their parents.

Food Lion is a division of the Delhaize Group.
