Bodega Latina to Buy 7 SoCal Gigante Stores

The deal between two Hispanic grocery specialty chains is part of Bodega Latina’s ongoing growth strategy.

Bodega Latina Corp., a City of Commerce, Calif.-based grocer with stores under the El Super banner, plans to buy seven Southern California stores from Gigante USA in a deal expected to close late August.

“This is a time of growth at Bodega Latina,” said Carlos Smith, c.e.o. and president of Bodega Latina. “We believe that bringing the Gigante stores into the El Super family will provide synergies that will benefit both the company and the consumers in Southern California.”

The Gigante stores -- located in Arleta, Anaheim, Compton, Covina, Inglewood, Santa Fe Springs, and Los Angeles -- will remain open after the deal closes to serve customers during their conversion to the El Super banner.

Bodega Latina operates nine El Super stores in Southern California and Arizona.
