Brookshire Brothers Fights Back Post-Ike

The entire store portfolio of Lufkin, Texas-based Brookshire Brothers Food & Pharmacy had lain directly in the path of Hurricane Ike, but by Tuesday 47 of its 73 stores eastern and central Texas and western Louisiana were up and running by noon, the chain said.

"We suffered minimal structural damage at the majority of our stores," Gloria McDonald, spokeswoman for the chain told Progressive Grocer on Tuesday. "Loss of power is our biggest problem at this time."

The grocer was opening units as quickly as possible because needs in the area are so great for essential products and services.

"Our goal is to reopen as quickly as possible while ensuring that our stores are safe to operate," McDonald said.
