Carnival the Latest Grocer to Dispense Bilingual Healthy Shopping Guides

COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores, Inc. here has joined forces with Boston-based Oldways, a non-profit food issues think tank, and its Latino Nutrition Coalition (LNC) to distribute "Camino Magico," a bilingual guide to healthy shopping, in more than 25 of Minyard's Carnival Supermarkets in north Texas.

"Camino Magico" is a free booklet aimed at promoting healthy food and lifestyle choices among Hispanic consumers.

Carnival said the project's purpose is to educate shoppers and, through better food choices, help delay the growing trend of diabetes and obesity in the DFW Metroplex.

The 16-page booklet, which has been distributed by several other supermarket chains as well, contains:
-- Updated Latin American Diet Pyramid
-- Calorie control guide
-- Basics of reading food labels
-- Dinner plate images showing the food groups
-- Recipes and meal ideas
-- Supermarket shopping list keyed to the pyramid's guidelines
