Central Grocers Eyeing New HQ
Franklin Park, Ill.-based Central Grocers Inc. is reportedly considering a move to Joliet, Ill., or Portage, Ind.
"We outgrew our site," said the cooperative's top executive, James Denges, according to press reports. The grocery co-op supplies independent grocery stores, is owned by its members, and operates Ultra Foods and Strack and Van Til retail subsidiaries.
Noting that he would ideally like to accomplish a relocation in the spring of 2009, Denges said Central Grocers is looking to purchase an approximately 900,000-square-foot building in the Cherry Hill Business Park in Joliet or at another site he declined to disclose in Portage. The building would serve as both warehouse and headquarters.
Central Grocers employs 350 people and supplies 225 independent supermarkets. Most of its two proprietary supermarkets, Ultra Foods and Strack and Van Til, are located in northwest Indiana though a handful are located in the Chicago area.
