CheckUps Closes Wal-Mart Walk-in Clinics

NEW YORK -- CheckUps here reportedly said yesterday it has closed the 23 walk-in medical clinics it was operating in Wal-Mart stores in four Southern states.

Wal-Mart began testing in-store health clinics in September 2005, and said last year that it planned to open as many as 400 in-store health clinics in the next two to three years. At the time it made that announcement, the company had 76 clinics operating inside Wal-Marts in 12 states.

Wal-Mart does not operate the clinics, but leases in-store space to outside operators, such as CheckUps. The clinics provide basic preventive and health services.

CheckUps operated clinics in Wal-Mart stores in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
