    Chiquita’s ‘Gift of Produce’

    Donation part of more than $4.6 million contributed in 2010
     

    Chiquita Brands International Inc. pledged support for the Houston Food Bank’s 24th annual Gift of Produce with a donation of more than 17,000 pounds of fresh bananas.

    Throughout 2010, Cincinnati-based company has provided people in need with healthy, nutritious product totaling more than $4.6 million retail value. “This is part of our corporate social responsibility commitment in action,” said Fernando Aguirre, chairman and CEO. “All our employees are proud to share Chiquita’s high-quality produce with people in need of nutritious food, especially during this season of giving.”

    The Houston Food Bank distributes 65 million pounds of food each year to 137,000 people each week. The Gift of Produce event was founded in 1986, and produce is distributed to Houston Food Bank member hunger relief agencies.
