MasterCard has become Sobeys' preferred payment card at 194 Sobeys banner stores in Ontario and western Canada. The agreement with MasterCard includes the launch of the first Sobeys-branded payment card, Club Sobeys MasterCard.
The card will feature MasterCard PayPass and chip technology. PayPass employs radio frequency technology to securely transmit payment details wirelessly between the PayPass device and the merchant's terminal. The transaction is then processed through the MasterCard network for clearing and settlement. PayPass cards can also be used in the traditional manner anywhere MasterCard is accepted.
Each new chip card carries a small computer processor chip with memory, logic, and a configuration of software applications. The chip contains information in an encrypted form, and when used in combination with a PIN can significantly enhance security. Canadian MasterCard chip cards will also continue to carry magnetic stripes to be compatible with nonchip payment sites and locations.
The introduction of the Sobeys card will be supported by advertising and in-store signage. Customers will be able to sign up for the Club Sobeys card in Sobeys stores beginning on Sept. 17 in western Canada, and on Sept. 19 in Ontario, according to MasterCard Canada.
