CORRECTED: Sherrell Named Acting CEO at Sunflower

Chris Sherrell has been appointed acting chief executive officer at Sunflower Farmers Market following the resignation of former chairman and CEO Michael Gilliland from his executive positions and the company’s board of directors.

“Sunflower appreciates the respect that Mr. Gilliland has shown for the company by his action, so that his personal affairs will not affect the company,” Sherrell said.

Arrested last week by Phoenix police, Gilliland is accused of soliciting sex online from a girl who identified herself as a minor, CNN has reported. Gilliland has said he believes he is not guilty and that he expects to be exonerated.

Additionally, Bennett Bertoli, a founding member of Sunflower’s board of directors, was elected chairman by the board. The change in management will not affect the company’s operations or its plans for continuing expansion, Sherrell said.

(Editor's note: An earlier version of this article accidentally transposed names, erroneously reporting that Sherrell faced charges. We regret the error.)

Sunflower Farmers Market is a chain of full-service grocery stores offering natural and organic products at the lowest possible price. The company has 32 stores in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Texas.
