On Thursday, Oct. 22, the finalists from each of the 18-store D’Agostino Supermarkets chain, which operates 15 stores in Manhattan, and three in New York’s Westchester County, will vie for the title of Metro NY’s Best Bagger. The NYC Best Bagger Championship, now in its third year, is the only all-New York-metropolitan-area event in the yearlong, nationwide program to find North America’s Best Bagger.
Contestants are rated on speed, bag-building technique, weight distribution between bags, style, attitude and appearance. This year, all items will be bagged in recyclable, reusable bags.
“Excellence in bagging represents an important element in providing outstanding customer service in an area in which independent community focused retailers excel -- and of course, New Yorkers like it when they can get in and out of the supermarket quickly and efficiently,” said Nicholas D’Agostino III, president and COO of Larchmont, N.Y.-based D’Agostino Supermarkets.
Competing in the Oct. 22 event will be the winners of the individual store competitions, which took place Oct. 1. Each store finalist won a $100 D’AG Gift Certificate and 5,000 S&H Green Points, redeemable at any of the grocer’s locations or at the Green Points Web site.
As in the store heats earlier this month, the Metro NY contestants will bag off with 25 to 30 items in just one round, using recyclable bags.
The overall winner of the Metro NY contest will receive a $500 gift certificate, additional Green Points and the chance to take part in the New York state competition, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6 at the D’Agostino store in Rye Brook, N.Y. The statewide winner then advances to the national finals in Las Vegas at the N.G.A. annual convention in February 2010. The 2010 competition marks the 24th annual NGA Best Bagger Competition, which was first held in Dallas.
