Del Monte Fresh Produce Co. Acquires Two Melon Operations
Del Monte Fresh Produce Co. recently acquired two melon operations in Guatemala aimed at further strengthening its position as a leader in the off-shore melon season as one of the world's leading fresh produce companies.
The combined acquired operations produced approximately 5 million boxes of cantaloupes and honeydews during the 2008 season. Neither company marketed their products under the Del Monte brand during the 2008 season.
Company officials say the acquisition further demonstrates Del Monte Fresh's commitment to invest in its key core product categories, as exemplified by its acquisitions earlier this summer of Caribana, the Costa Rican banana and pineapple company, as well as the melon assets from a 50 percent joint venture partner in Costa Rica.
With combined operations throughout Costa Rica and Guatemala, Del Monte Fresh says it intends to provide a seasonlong source of supply that will allow it to better serve the increasing needs of its customers in North America with premium-quality melons.
