2 Aldi Stores Earn Platinum GreenChill Status

Two supermarkets operated by Batavia, Ill.-based Aldi US in Webster and West Carthage, N.Y., have earned Platinum GreenChill certification, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) highest sustainability award for food retailers, thanks to their deployment of refrigeration systems using natural refrigerants.

The locations installed Hillphoenix Advansor CO₂ Booster Systems, which employ carbon dioxide-based refrigerant with a global-warming potential (GWP) rating of 1. By contrast, an HFC-based refrigerant can have a GWP rating as high as 3985. The stores also feature Hillphoenix closed-door refrigerated cases with energy-conserving technology.

GreenChill is a voluntary program with the goal of reducing environmentally harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) in commercial refrigeration. While more than 11,000 food retail stores in the United States are GreenChill partners, just 12 have been certified Platinum.

“What we’ve seen through our GreenChill program is that consumers want to shop in stores that share their environmental values,” noted Tom Land, manager of EPA’s GreenChill Partnership. “By being dedicated to GreenChill standards, these stores demonstrate their interest in maintaining environmentally sustainable operations.”

The Webster and West Carthage Aldi locations are among more than 50 stores that installed Hillphoenix Advansor CO₂ Booster systems in 2015.

Conyers, Ga.-based Hillphoenix Inc., a Dover Company, designs and manufactures commercial refrigerated display cases and specialty products, refrigeration systems, integrated power distribution systems and walk-in coolers and freezers. It was a founding member of the GreenChill Partnership in 2007 and this year received its fifth award from the program.
