Market 32 Opens First Newly Constructed Connecticut Store

The Golub Corp. has cut the ribbon on its first newly constructed Market 32 in Connecticut, serving as the anchor of Oxford’s long-anticipated Quarry Walk mixed-use development.

The new store marks the 10th to open since Golub Corp. announced its plans to develop the new brand across the majority of its stores over the next decade. To date, eight of the company’s Price Chopper stores have undergone rebranding, while two have been built from the ground up, the other in Sutton, Mass. Several more conversions currently are underway across the chain’s footprint, while another new store, being built in Ft. Edward, N.Y., is on track to open before the end of the year.

Market 32’s look and feel is “distinctively more modern” than Price Chopper’s, though many of the differences are subtle. Marked by open space, a décor filled with soft earth tones and product-focused displays, murals and lighting, the brand emphasizes convenient, ready-to-eat foods; fresh, handcrafted and locally grown, produced and manufactured products; and intuitive product/department adjacencies such as greeting cards near the floral department.

Golub Executive Chairman Neil Golub, Vice Chairman Jerry Golub and President and CEO Scott Grimmet, along with Store Manager Guido Martini, State Rep. David Labriola, State Sen. Rob Kane and other elected officials, civic leaders, team members and local residents attended the ceremony, with members of the American Legion Post 174 raising the flag. The previous night, a catered “preview party” drew several hundred people to the store and raised thousands of dollars for the Oxford High School Booster Club, Oxford Pop Warner Football and Cheer, and the Seymour Oxford Food Bank Inc. Market 32 and Haynes Development matched all proceeds collected at the door.

“Our Oxford Market 32 is a grocery store for this and future generations,” Grimmett said. “While maintaining our focus on quality and value, we’ve added a host of wonderful signature items throughout the store, plus modern conveniences like customized prepared foods, a patisserie/café equipped with wi-fi, a drive-thru pharmacy, a Chef’s Table offering food demonstrations and sampling, and a new, higher standard of service.”

Through Market 32, Golub intends to communicate the banner’s commitment to supporting local manufacturers and growers, sourcing authentic imports and expanding varieties of gluten-free, organic and natural products. Unique destination displays offer a wide variety of popular categories such as pasta and sauce, rice and grains, oils and vinegars, and spices, helping to add ideas and excitement to the shopping experience.

Based in Schenectady, N.Y., Golub Corp. owns and operates 135 Price Chopper and Market 32 stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and employs 20,000 teammates.
