Food Lion Earns 14th Consecutive EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year Award
Food Lion has garnered a 2015 Energy Star Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its ongoing commitment to energy efficiency. This is the 14th year in a row that the Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer has received the award, making it the only supermarket operator to do so.
The award "speaks to our commitment to energy conservation and reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout our 10-state footprint," noted Susan Sollenberger, Food Lion's director of energy, maintenance and equipment purchasing. "Since beginning our partnership with the EPA and Energy Star, Food Lion's energy reductions are equivalent to powering the average American home for more than 78,500 years."
The awards are given to a range of organizations in recognition of their reductions of greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency practices. The Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award is the Energy Star program's highest honor.
"Through its sustained participation with Energy Star, Food Lion is helping Americans save money, save energy and do their part to reduce our nation's greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.
The grocery chain’s energy efficiency accomplishments will be recognized in Washington, D.C., on April 20.
