Hannaford Sets Opening for Smaller-format Store

Hannaford Supermarkets will open its first smaller-format store on Aug. 8 in North Berwick, Maine.

At just 20,000 square feet, the location is half the size of the Scarborough, Maine-based grocer's other locations. According to published reports, Hannaford is using the store as a pilot for possible expansion as the grocer fills in geographies between its conventional supermarket formats.

Offering a wide assortment of fresh produce; a walk-in beer cooler; gluten-free, natural and organic items; and thousands of other popular fresh, frozen and packaged grocery items, the store will employ up to 75 associates.

"Customers will find their North Berwick Hannaford to be a convenient, affordable and friendly place to shop," noted Store Manager Gary Nadeau, a longtime local resident. "This Hannaford also will be an active partner with the community in making North Berwick an even better place to live and work."

To celebrate the store opening, Hannaford is giving $3,000 to the North Berwick Fire Department for equipment, $6,000 to the town of North Berwick for flags to be flown during the Mill Field Festival, and $650 to the North Berwick Little League.

Additionally, the store's first 300 customers will receive Hannaford gift cards valued at between $5 and $250; other opening-day activities include local food sampling, giveaways and music.

A Delhaize America company, Hannaford operates 186 stores in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, employing more than 27,000 associates.
