Stop & Shop Plans Apartments in Boston

Northeast supermarket chain Stop & Shop is apparently interested in taking advantage of Boston’s development boom with a proposal to construct 1,000-plus apartments in a predominantly commercial area in Allston-Brighton, according to published reports. The preliminary filing submitted to city officials outlines what could be among Beantown’s largest housing developments.

The multiphase mixed-use project would begin with a 360-unit residential building and a new supermarket to replace the 20-year-old store currently at the site, The Boston Globe reported, with later phases of the project adding as many as 650 more housing units, retail, parking and maybe office space.

According to the Globe, Stop & Shop also said it would create open space within the property and a street and bikeway, but didn’t offer a timeline for the project.

“We are excited to share our vision with the community and look forward to hearing from our neighbors as we bring this project to life,” said Linda Costanzo, director of real estate for Stop & Shop’s parent company, Quincy, Mass.-based Ahold USA. “We welcome a thoughtful dialogue about how to maximize the local benefits associated with this project.”

Additional details are expected this spring, the Globe noted, citing a company representative.

The 11-acre property is next to the new Boston Landing development under construction by athletic shoe manufacturer New Balance, which, according to the Globe, will include the company headquarters, several hundred apartments and a new commuter rail station.
