Weis Debuts New Concept Store on Harrisburg’s West Shore

New community market design takes retailer in new realm

Weis Markets’ new community market design concept store opened this week on Harrisburg, Pa.’s West Shore town of Enola

In the works for several years, Weis Markets took the wraps off a new concept store in Harrisburg, Pa.’s West Shore community of Enola. The debut of the 65,000 square foot supermarket represents a milestone event for the Central Pa.-based retailer, whose stores have followed a similar design scheme in recent years.

Boasting and in-store ice cream parlor and its first in-store pub – complete with a rotating selection of draft beers and a growler station, alongside an adjoining café with 900 domestic and craft beers and 500 varieties of wine – Weis Markets’ new design features a food court, service-focused fresh departments and extensive variety throughout.

Other highlights include a drive-thru pharmacy, Gas N’ Go fuel center and online ordering with in-store pick up.

Company execs have high hopes for its new “community market design,” which will help elevate its brand with a more experiential format. “Each new feature of this store was designed to not only provide convenience to our customers, but to also elevate the grocery shopping experience,” explained CEO Jonathan Weis. “We wanted to look beyond what our customers are putting in their carts to offer a distinctive shopping experience that combines value, variety and service. We think we achieved this goal,” he noted.

Other store features include a produce department with 1,200 conventionally grown and 200 organic options; an in-store bakery offering signature artisanal breads, gourmet cookies and chocolates; and a service meat department featuring custom-cut Certified Angus Beef. The meat department also features an expanded selection of organic and natural beef, pork and poultry.

The eco-friendly store includes LED lighting and skylights to provide natural light and reduce electric lighting needs, as well as enclosed refrigeration cases and advanced refrigeration technologies to reduce emissions by 60 percent.

The timing of Weis’s new concept store grand opening coincides with its strong performance logged in 2016, during which it also achieved some of the biggest strides made in its 104-year history.  Read more about solid 2016 and Q4 performance here
