BJ's Wholesale Club Sees Double-digit Sales Gains in May

BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. posted May 2008 sales of $824.3 million, a 15.9 percent from the $711.0 million reported in May 2007. Comparable-club sales for the month grew 13.4 percent, including a contribution from gas sales of 6.6 percent. In the year-ago period the company reported a comparable-club sales rise of 4.1 percent, including a positive impact from gas sales of 1.0 percent.

According to BJ's food sales, increased about 11 percent, due to strong sales of perishables, while general merchandise sales were essentially flat vs. last year.

Departments with the strongest sales increases over last year included bakery, candy, coffee, cookies, dairy, frozen, HBC, household chemicals, meat, oils and shortenings, pet food, plastic bags & wraps, paper, produce, snacks and video games. Among the departments with weaker performances than last year were air conditioners, apparel, cigarettes, summer seasonal, televisions and water.

Natick, Mass.-based BJ's operates 178 wholesale clubs in 16 states.
