Distribution Center to Create 250 Jobs in Maryland

ELKTON, Md. - Burris Logistics, a temperature-controlled food distribution center business based in Milford, Del., hopes to create 250 full-time jobs in Cecil County, Md. when it opens a warehouse in Elkton, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The company plans to begin operating by early 2005 in a 220,000-square-foot facility it will build on 30 acres in the Broadlands Industrial Park. Burris will employ 175 workers when the warehouse opens, with the rest of the jobs to be added within three years.

Burris has 13 refrigerated and frozen warehousing locations along the East Coast. It plans to spend $23 million to open the facility in Cecil County. The state pledged a $400,000 loan toward the land and construction costs, which won't have to be repaid if the company meets its job goals. Maryland is also offering a handful of tax credits. Cecil County provided $80,000 in tax credits, spread out over a decade.

"Both the state and the county made it clear they wanted Burris to be a part of their community," said Donnie Burris, the company's regional v.p., in a statement. "They have been aggressive with their incentives and have given us the ability to move rapidly on the construction of this facility."
