Protesters Be Damned, Wal-Mart Opens First L.A. County Supercenter

LOS ANGELES -- After three years of weathering protests by local officials, labor unions, and community activists, Wal-Mart Stores yesterday opened its first supercenter in Los Angeles County in Palmdale.

Putting a positive community spin on the development, Wal-Mart said that with more than 116,000 general merchandise and grocery products, the Palmdale Wal-Mart Supercenter provides a glimpse of the future for Southern California shoppers.

The new 205,000-sq.-ft. supercenter features 36 general merchandise departments -- inclusive of apparel and accessories, jewelry, a lawn and garden center, health and beauty aids, and a full line of electronics -- as well as a food store complete with bakery, deli, produce and meat departments, frozen foods, seafood, dairy products and specialty Asian and Hispanic foods.

The 24/7 operation includes 18 full-service and 10 express check-out lanes as well as six additional lanes in the garden center. Other store features include: a Tire & Lube Express, McDonald's, portrait studio, one-hour photo lab, vision center, pharmacy with two drive-through lanes, Smart Style hair salon and Regal nail salon. In addition, the store has a family fun center and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for cellular phone sales.
