Meat Institute’s MyMeatUp App Debuts

The North American Meat Institute (NAMI) has launched what it calls a "first-of-its-kind" mobile app to help consumers make more confident and informed meat and poultry purchases. According to Washington, D.C.-based NAMI, the free app is the only one available with a full guide to beef, pork, lamb and veal retail meat cuts, and employs content from www.MyMeatUp.org, a Millennial-friendly resource that NAMI launched last year

“This dynamic, interactive app offers consumers a convenient, go-to guide that will equip shoppers with essential tips when buying, preparing and cooking meat and poultry products,” noted NAMI President and CEO Barry Carpenter. “It is a great resource, particularly for younger shoppers just starting to navigate the grocery store on their own for themselves and their families, to answer any questions they have about the meat in the case.”

MyMeatUp addresses consumer uncertainty about how to choose and prepare meat and poultry through a feature that visually displays the most common retail beef, veal, pork and lamb cuts. By selecting a specific animal part, users can view images of common retail cuts, as well as corresponding explanations, recipes and appropriate cooking methods. Additionally, the app’s search function enables users to quickly find information on cuts with which they are unfamiliar.

Further MyMeatUp features include a searchable glossary of common terms found on meat product labels, such as “natural,” “grass-fed,” “antibiotic-free” and “no hormones added”; answers to common questions about the meat and poultry industry, among them antibiotic use in animal agriculture, animal welfare practices, environmental concerns and nutrition facts; food safety and preparation tips; and a video guide demonstrating how to use a meat thermometer.

The app is available for both iPhone and Android users.
