America's Second Harvest Names Albertsons Retailer of the Year

LOS ANGELES - Hunger relief organization America's Second Harvest announced that Albertsons was selected as its Retailer of the Year. The award is presented each year to a corporate partner that makes an extraordinary donation of time, money and/or food to the network of more than 200 food banks and food-rescue organizations that make up America's Second Harvest.

In the past year, Albertsons has donated more than 19 million pounds of food and household goods to food banks and local hunger-relief programs across the country. In addition, the company has partnered with Second Harvest to increase awareness about hunger and hunger-relief programs in America. Through its network of 2,300 stores in 31 states, Albertsons has committed advertising and in-store display space to the cause. In addition, Albertsons associates have given thousands of volunteer hours to the effort.

"Albertsons consistently has risen above its everyday business to show a deep commitment to feeding hungry people," said Robert Forney, president and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "The company's efforts to improve the communities in which it operates exemplify the best practices of our generous donors."

Larry Johnston, chairman and CEO of Albertsons, commented, "This recognition belongs to our unified team of 200,000 associates across the U.S. who not only work hard to make life easier for our customers each day but also embrace our core value of giving back to those in need. As a leader in the food and drug industries, we are very proud to be a leader in the area of hunger relief. "

Johnston noted that Albertsons will bolster its food donations in September, having declared September as National Bread Month across all company food banners. The company will donate five cents to America's Second Harvest food banks for every loaf of Albertsons French bread, Jewel crusty French bread or Acme Italian bread sold during the month. The campaign is being promoted in the weekly newspaper advertising.
