C&S To Close Cranston, R.I. Warehouse

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. said it will close its Cranston Logistics grocery warehouse operation in Cranston, R.I., in April and will lay off 226 workers, the Providence Journal reports.

C&S acquired the 230,000-square-foot food distribution center in September from Supervalu Inc. in an asset swap. The facility services New England-area retailers and will be shuttered April 4, C&S spokesman Carl Wistreich told the paper.

After C&S and Supervalu agreed to the asset swap, a Supervalu spokeswoman said the company would terminate the 282 employees at Cranston Logistics although C&S said it would rehire many of the workers in mid-September, which it did.

However, the C&S spokesman told the paper that after conducting a thorough analysis, it was no longer economically prudent to keep the facility open. C&S says it will serve its Cranston Logistics customers from other distribution centers.
