Earth Fare Kicks ‘Bag Habit’

As of yesterday, which, as anyone who doesn’t live in a cave is aware, was Earth day, Earth Fare has officially “Cut the Bag Habit” by eliminating the use of plastic grocery bags at checkouts in all 17 of its stores. The Asheville, N.C.-based natural foods grocer will continue to provide recyclable paper bags and grocery boxes. As a result of the move, Earth Fare hopes to reduce the plastic that ends up polluting landfills, oceans and roads.

In 1994, the company debuted the “Friend of Earth Fare” program to support the local community and help the environment by urging customers to use recyclable bags. The initiative offers a five-cent donation for each reusable bag used during a shopping trip.

To celebrate its latest green endeavor, Earth Fare hosted an Earth Day celebration in its stores, distributing over 5,000 free Earth Fare reusable tote bags.

A similar Earth Day bag giveaway took place at San Antonio-based HEB, which yesterday distributed 250,000 reusable shopping bags with the goal of removing 1.5 million plastic bags from circulation. The program occurred simultaneously at all HEB stores across Texas during a four-hour period of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., while supplies lasted. Anyone who brought at least five plastic shopping bags from any retailer to an HEB store for recycling received a coupon for one free reusable non-woven polypropylene shopping bag, with a limit of one bag per customer.

Additionally, Modesto, Calif.-based Save Mart has launched a bag giveaway promotion with Tropicana that will run through April 27. To read more, click here.
