Food City Launches Fuel Rewards Program

ABINGDON, Va. – Regional supermarket chain Food City is playing its part to ease the burden of rising fuel costs on its shoppers with a fuel savings program called "Food City Fuel Bucks."

Although the program started as a pilot May 14, it is receiving extra marketing attention as it enters its second half, which will last through July 29.

As part of the promotion, Food City ValuCard shoppers will have two ways to earn "fuel bucks." For every $25 in groceries they spend in a single shopping trip -- regardless of the brand name -- shoppers will receive a $1 fuel buck. In addition, shoppers can also earn a $1 fuel buck for every $10 in Food City store brand purchases, which include Food City, Food Club, Full Circle, Paws, ValuTime, Top Care, Academix, World Classics, and Dining-In lines of products.

"Higher gas prices are challenging family budgets, which is putting a strain on food budgets," said Steve Smith, Food City president and c.e.o. "Customer service is our top priority at Food City. We live, work, and educate our children in the communities where we operate, and we are very aware of the effect rising fuel costs are having on the families we serve."

Fuel bucks automatically dispense at the checkout at the conclusion of each shopping trip, and customers can redeem fuel bucks at any Food City Gas 'N Go location before Sept. 4. To redeem the vouchers, customers present their fuel bucks to the Gas 'N Go cashier along with their ValuCard when purchasing fuel. The campaign does not include the purchase of videos, gift cards, pharmacy items, cigarettes, or alcohol.

Food City operates 97 retail food outlets throughout the tri-state region of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and Northeast Tennessee.
