Food Lion Introduces Private Label Ice Cream Sweetened With Splenda

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion is introducing Healthy Delight "No Sugar Added" Premium Lowfat Ice Cream, which it claims is the grocery industry's first private label brand sweetened with sucralose (Splenda brand sweetener) and formulated to contain no gluten.

The new product is billed as a healthy, low-fat alternative to regular ice cream. It contains 70 to 80 percent less fat and 30 to 40 percent fewer calories than standard ice cream, according to the company. Since dairy products contain the milk sugar lactose, the product cannot be labeled as "sugar-free," but instead is defined as "no sugar added," the company said.

"This ice cream is ideal for diabetics or customers seeking low-fat, low-calorie alternatives to traditional desserts," said Food Lion brand product manager Donna Smith. "In addition, the new formula contains no gluten and is a great choice for those with gluten-sourced allergies, such as celiac sprue disease."

Dairy Fresh, a Winston-Salem, N.C. subsidiary of Dean Foods, manufactures the ice cream. Dairy Fresh produces all Food Lion brand ice cream.
