Former Local Anchorwoman Named Bashas' Director of P.R.

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Regional retailer Bashas' has tapped former anchorwoman Mary Jo West as its new director of public relations. West replaces Diana Bejarano-Medina, who left the company in May. West will assume her new position with the retailer on June 26.

West made history when she became Phoenix's first primetime female TV anchor in 1976. At Bashas', she'll oversee all corporate communications, public relations, and community relations activities for Bashas' four formats: Bashas', Food City, AJ's Fine Foods, and Bashas' Diné. Combined, these formats represent more than 150 stores throughout Arizona.

"We are extremely pleased to have Mary Jo join us," said Mike Proulx, president of Bashas', in a statement. "Her background, experience, and close ties to the community make her an asset to the Bashas' team."

West has earned top awards for her reporting, including two Emmys and the prestigious Peabody award. She also was the first newswoman inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In addition to working in Phoenix, Florida, and Georgia, West anchored Nightwatch for CBS Television in New York City.

Prior to joining Bashas', West worked for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix as a public information officer and spokeswoman.
