Fred Meyer to Build Grocery-Only Store
HOMER, Alaska - In an effort to appease local government officials, Fred Meyer plans on building a 45,000-square-foot store here that will be limited to groceries and liquor. The Portland, Ore.-based chain, a division of Kroger, initially sought to build a 90,000-square-foot department store that would also have sold clothing and general merchandise.
Fred Meyer has never built a store as small as 45,000 square feet, though it has acquired stores smaller than that. "We're talking about a very small store," Rob Boley, a Fred Meyer spokesman, told the Kenai Peninsula Clarion newspaper. "Unfortunately, to go with a store this small, we will have to focus on food and not be able to bring general merchandise and apparel to town."
However, the store will be built in a design to allow for future expansion should the local zoning laws change in the future.
