H-E-B Central Market Launches New Private Label Products

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The spread of the good-for-you private label movement continues, this time with respected specialty merchandiser H-E-B Central Market throwing its hat into the ring.

A division of H.E. Butt Grocery Co., Central Market said yesterday it is rolling out "dozens" of new food items under the Central Market Organics and Central Market All Natural private labels.

"We've been busy behind the scenes for a couple of years finding the right products that would earn the right to carry the CM label," said Central Market in its e-mail newsletter, "The Foodie," The retailer said "high quality, excellent value and, most of all, great flavor" were prerequisites for inclusion in the health-oriented product lines. The company said that, whenever possible, it had opted to support small family farms across the United States, as well as family-owned producers in Europe.

The Central Market Organics line, which is USDA-certified organic, offers such items as popcorn (microwave and pre-popped), pasta sauces, dried pastas, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, fruit preserves, tortilla chips, and orange juice. The All Natural Central Market line includes cookie dough, espresso beans, and sparkling mineral water. Neither line uses genetically modified ingredients of any kind.

H-E-B Central Market currently has a few dozen products in stores now, but plans to feature more than 200 by the end of the year.

H-E-B Central Market has seven Texas locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Plano, and San Antonio. The upscale stores feature such amenities as live music events, cooking schools, and comparison tastings.
