Kansas City Price Choppers, Dillons Match Wal-Mart's Drug Initiative.

KANSAS CITY -- The $4 generic drug movement picked up more steam this week when Price Chopper, this market's most pervasive grocery banner, declared it would offer more than 300 generic prescriptions at $4 each at 29 store pharmacies in the Kansas City area, plus two in Topeka and two in St. Joseph.

The move follows the recent announcement by Wal-Mart to expand its $4 generic drug plan to Kansas, Missouri and 10 other states a month after inaugurating the program in Florida.

Most Price Chopper stores are owned by several area grocery families, but all are affiliated with Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc., a food distributor based in Kansas City, Kan.

Cincinnati-based Kroger's Kansas City Dillons area stores will also match the $4 deals from Wal-Mart and Price Chopper, and will match similar promotions from others.
