Loblaw Marks 20 Years of PC G.R.E.E.N. Products

With Earth Month underway, Loblaw Cos., Ltd., Canada's largest grocery retailer, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its President's Choice G.R.E.E.N product line with the launch of its first paperless PC G.R.E.E.N Insider's Report, now available online at www.pc.ca. The first such report was created in 1989. The reports give information about the PC G.R.E.E.N. products offered in Loblaw banner stores.

The company noted that it has been developing “effective and economical” eco-friendly products since 1989, including the new PC G.R.E.E.N Diaper and PC G.R.E.E.N 4 in 1 Dishwasher Detergent, the latter of which is the No. 1-selling option in Loblaw stores.

Loblaw touts the diaper as its “best performing and most environmentally responsible … yet.” Featuring stretchy elastic sides for maximum comfort, a superabsorbent core to lock away wetness and a fragrance- and dye-free hypoallergenic liner, the product employs wood pulp harvested from sustainably managed forests and processing without chlorine bleach, thereby helping to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals released into rivers and lakes.

The diaper is one of several new PC G.R.E.E.N products and reformulations making its debut this spring, bringing the total number of items in the line to 42.

"Making small changes in everyday routines can have an impact on a household's ecological footprint," said environmentalist and scientist Colin Isaacs, a key independent advisor to the brand. "I have personally witnessed the painstaking attention to detail that goes into creating PC G.R.E.E.N products and ensuring that their impact on the environment is significantly lower than that of popular national brands. At the same time they are tested to ensure that they are as effective for their intended use as the popular national brands."

Loblaw additionally pointed out that its all of its private label products -- not just the PC G.R.E.E.N. items -- have been reformulated without phosphates, a full year in advance of the Canadian federal government’s pronouncement that all laundry, dishwasher and some household products must limit phosphates to .05 percent by 2010.

"Loblaw is committed to providing our customers with green product choices that meet the stringent President's Choice brand standards for quality and value, as well as meeting the ever-changing needs of Canadian families," said Claudio Gemmiti, VP, Loblaw Brands and Brand Development Lead, PC G.R.E.E.N.

A subsidiary of George Weston Limited, Loblaw is a leading provider of drug store, general merchandise and financial products and services. Operating more than 1,000 corporate and franchised stores from coast to coast, Loblaw and its franchisees employ over 139,000 full-time and part-time associates.
