Peapod by Stop & Shop Adds Two Facilities in New Jersey
QUINCY, Mass. and CHICAGO -- Stop & Shop and Internet grocer Peapod, LLC said yesterday that they have added two new distribution centers in New Jersey, which will kick off service to additional ZIP codes in the central part of the state Nov. 29.
The new DC in Wanaque will deliver to the communities of Ridgewood, Paramus, Fair Lawn, Hawthorne, and Saddle River, among others. In early 2006, the service area will be expanded to include such towns as Mahwah, Wayne, Westwood, and Parsippany. The DC in Somerset will service towns including Hillsborough, Somerset, New Brunswick, Old Bridge, and Sayreville, with such additional towns as Cranbury, Princeton, Englishtown, and Trenton to be added early next year.
Peapod already serves residents in vicinity of Watchung, N.J.
Residents in these communities will be able to visit http://www.stopandshop.com to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, meat, and dairy, in addition to best-selling national brands and Stop & Shop private label items.
Stop & Shop and Peapod are both owned by Ahold, which operates over 1,300 supermarkets in the United States and around the world. Peapod serves 16 U.S. markets, including the metro areas of Chicago, Boston, Long Island and Washington, D.C., and communities in the states of Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Rhode Island.
In other Stop & Shop news, the retailer sent an 18- wheeler packed with Thanksgiving nonperishables to the Staten Island Borough President's office in Staten Island, N.Y., to provide emergency relief and assistance to 45 food pantries across the New York City borough.
Borough President James Molinaro contacted Stop & Shop when he discovered that the island's food pantries wouldn't be receiving an expected delivery, leaving many needy residents without food for Thanksgiving.
A police escort accompanied the truck on Monday at 3 p.m. to Staten Island's Borough Hall. The 18-wheeler delivered 80 cases of chicken broth, 128 cases of cake mix, 120 cases of yams, 128 cases of mashed potatoes and stuffing, 80 cases of cranberry sauce, 85 cases of canned green beans, 102 cases of canned corn, and 120 cases of gravy, among other supplies. The food had a retail value of $25,000.
Stop & Shop is now in the midst of its Food for Friends program, which has the goal of raising $1 million for food banks. This Thanksgiving season the grocer has delivered 16,000 turkeys to food banks in its trade areas.
