Red Baron, Cub Foods Partner To Salute Hockey Moms

STILLWATER, Minn. -- CUB Foods here and Red Baron pizza celebrated what the partners termed a highly successful "Salute to Hockey Moms," which enlisted kids to write essays about why their mom should be the Red Baron Hockey Mom of the Year.

Red Baron's "Salute to Hockey Moms" program seeks to recognize Minnesota hockey moms for all that they do for the young hockey players in their families. Prior to selecting the winner, local youth hockey players were invited to submit their entries by telling why, in 150 words or less, their mom should be nominated.

Rising at the crack of dawn to get kids to hockey practice, pick up the hockey team from a night game, drive through blinding snowstorms, and nurse wounds, hockey moms also do a Herculean job of soothing bruised egos and washing pounds of soiled hockey gear annually while skating through life's trials.

After tabbing the nominations, Judy Simon -- endorsed by her daughters, Sarah and Melissa -- was selected as the contest's winner among nine other semi-finalists. Simon was recently recognized at a recent awards ceremony that took place between the first and second periods of the Red Baron Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Final Five Game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. As the grand prizewinner, Simon received an all expense paid trip for two to a luxury spa destination.

The nine semi-finalists received a luxury gift package that included a spa day, a digital Nikon camera and a $50 Cub Foods gift card. They were also honored at a VIP reception, hosted by the makers of Red Baron products and Cub Foods, which was held prior to the WCHA Final Five tournament game.

Minnesota, renowned as "The State of Hockey," has more children participating in organized hockey than any other state in the nation. Last season, more than 43,000 boys and girls were registered to play youth hockey, while approximately 10,000 boys and girls played hockey on high school teams.

As part of Minnesota-based Schwan's Consumer Brands North America, Inc., the makers of Red Baron pizza, currently in the third year of a title sponsorship agreement with WCHA, recently renewed its title sponsorship for the Final Five championship tournament for five more years.
