Roundy's Expands Organic Line

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Roundy's based here has added a medley of new organic products -- including soy milk, frozen fruit, peanut butter and pizza -- to its growing private label line.

All told, the company has added 313 private label items this year, including pet food, select paper products, frozen steamed vegetables, bagels, whole bean coffee and beef jerky, according to local reports.

"The baby boomers are looking for something better to put in their systems," Robert Mariano, chairman and c.e.o. was quoted as saying. "People are more aware of what they're putting into their bodies."

The Milwaukee-based company -- which operates 147 retail grocery stores under the Pick 'n Save, Copps and Rainbow Foods banners in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin -- said it plans to add about 2,500 Roundy's brand products to its shelves over the next two or three years.

In other news, the Roundy's-owned Metro Market located at 1123 N. Van Buren in Milwaukee, hosted its second Singles Night customer event last Friday. Dubbed "On the Market in the Market," the night operated much like Metro's very first singles night held on August 18, but this time there was a lively holiday theme. In addition to a live disc jockey and the chance to sample hand-dipped caramel apples and other Metro Market specialties, customers also had the opportunity to send video text messages on a big screen to a person they noticed in the store, decorate gingerbread men and even have their picture taken with Santa.

In order to participate, customers were asked to bring a canned good to drop in the "Food for Families" barrel on behalf of the Hunger Task Force. Although the event took place after the close of Metro Market's regular hours, the store was also open for other customers needing to do some shopping.
