Shoppers Food & Pharmacy's Annual Charity Golf Classic Raises Money for Nonprofits
LANHAM Md. -- Shoppers Food & Pharmacy's 2005 Charity Golf Classic, the company's annual fundraising event, which was held last week, has raised more than $300,000 for five area nonprofits, the retailer said Friday.
With more than 400 participants, the tournament was the largest in Shoppers' history and one of the biggest charity tournaments on the East Coast, according to the company. This year, play was extended to four courses: Waverly Woods Golf Club, Timbers at Troy Golf Club, and two courses at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center. Participants included several retired NFL players, among them former Baltimore Colts Toni Linhart and Lydell Mitchell and former Washington Redskin Larry Brown, along with sports broadcast personalities Brent Harris, anchor and reporter with Comcast SportsNet, and Steve Davis, host of WBAL-AM's Sportsline.
"While we strive to make the day enjoyable for the hundreds of golfers who participate, the real goal of the tournament is to raise money for a variety of worthwhile organizations within our community," noted Shoppers president Bill White. "Every year this tournament gets bigger and bigger, enabling Shoppers to provide more and more financial support to these wonderful organizations."
In addition to the golf event, Shoppers takes part in Food for All, a nationwide annual food industry fundraiser to combat hunger. This year Shoppers also joined with WBFF-TV Fox 45 for "Freedom from Hunger," a summer food drive and collection of personal care items for Maryland's soldiers serving in the Middle East. Shoppers has additionally contributed trucks to the Maryland Food Bank, which are used to distribute food to soup kitchens and pantries throughout the state. And Shoppers, through its parent company, Supervalu, has donated cash and critical supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims.
