Spartan Banners Enter $4 Generic Drug Derby

Spartan Stores' D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare banner pharmacies have jumped aboard the $4 generic drug bandwagon, by offering consumers a chance at lower prices for drug choices that meet their healthcare needs.

The newly implemented program includes drugs that treat a variety of conditions and diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.

"This is another example of the many ways our supermarkets and pharmacies are making it easier for customers to stretch their healthcare dollars," said Alan Hartline, e.v.p. of Spartan Stores, the corporate owner of Family Fare and D&W pharmacies.

Hartline said the generic discount drug program complements other health and wellness initiatives Family Fare and D&W Fresh Markets offer throughout the year to help stretch healthcare dollars, prevent illnesses, and educate customers on healthy lifestyles.

The $4.00 generics program covers more than 300 drugs prescribed in 30-day supplies, including allergy medications, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, anticoagulants, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, antipsychotics, and antivirals. Included are drugs for anxiety, asthma, cancer, high cholesterol, cough/colds, dental problems, diabetes, glaucoma, gout, heart conditions, high blood pressure, nervous system problems, Parkinson's disease, skin conditions, thyroid trouble, and urinary tract infections. Diuretics are part of the program, as are ear analgesics, gastrointestinal drugs, hormones, muscle relaxants, supplements, and vitamins.

In addition to its 84 corporately owned supermarkets in Michigan - under the banners Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets and Felpausch Food Centers -- Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spartan Stores also services nearly 400 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.
