Spartan Stores Consolidates Retail Banners

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Spartan Stores Inc. announced yesterday that it will consolidate its retail grocery banners to streamline operations and create a stronger, more unified brand identity.

The company will rename its six Ashcraft's Markets, three Great Day Food Centers, and eight Prevo's Family Markets either Family Fare Supermarkets or Glen's Markets. Twenty-three of Spartan's retail grocery stores operate under the Glen's Markets banner, while 13 use the Family Fare Supermarkets name. Those two banners are the company's most recognized retail store names.

"Following an extensive market review, we decided to consolidate our current five retail store banners to just two," said Craig C. Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president, and c.e.o. "The retail store name changes will create a stronger retail store brand identity with consumers and make our retail marketing efforts more efficient and effective. Customers at the affected stores can expect high product and service quality standards during and after the name conversions."

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Spartan Stores Inc. operates warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich. The company distributes more than 40,000 private label and national brand products to 330 independent grocery stores in that state.
