Stew Leonard’s Now Offering Organic Milk

Harking back to its family roots as progressive dairy farmers and retailers, Stew Leonard’s began carrying its own brand of certified USDA organic milk Friday. Produced from family-owned farms throughout New England, Stew Leonard’s Organic Whole Milk, Organic 1% Lowfat Milk and Organic Fat Free Milk varieties come in half-gallon cartons and are available for purchase at the introductory price of $2.99.

“Our customers have raised their families drinking Stew Leonard’s milk for more than 40 years!” noted company CEO Stew Leonard Jr. “Our milk has always been free from synthetic hormones, and we’ve always sold milk from local farms for the lowest price in town. However, our customers have been asking for organic milk, so we knew the time was right to introduce this new product. We know our customers will love the taste of Stew Leonard’s Organic Milk, and we can all feel great about supporting local farming families from around the region.”

Stew Leonard’s regular milk retails for $1.89 per half-gallon. The company explains that the price difference is because of the type of feed provided to the cows. Farmers who raise organic cows in accordance the National Organic Standards must purchase organic feed for their cows, which costs about three times the cost of regular feed, which ultimately affects the price of the organic milk.

All of Stew Leonard’s milk, whether regular and organic, is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorous and riboflavin, according to the grocer.

Stew Leonard’s operates four stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn., and Yonkers, N.Y.
